RARE -- TERRI, EROTIQUE, CELLULOID, PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1927
For the sophisticated collector - this unique and hard-to-find perfume bottle was made by Terri Cosmetics, Inc. for the fragrance, Erotique, in 1927. The bottle and cap are made of celluloid with a very realistic faux alligator texture. As a matter of note, there is an ad for this perfume bottle in Vogue Magazine, dated November 1, 1927. The bottle in the ad has no hang-tag or visible labeling. Along side the ad is a one-column editorial promoting "...Terri's new perfume..." It states the bottle was "encircled by a sterling silver wedding ring" - now missing. I like to think that it was put on the finger of a young bride and that may be why it is no longer on the bottle! It could easily and inexpensively be replaced. Definitely a conversation piece.
Size: 2" h. Condition: The edge of the cap has 5 tiny cracks approx. 1/8" (see photo) because of the color and texture, are difficult to see and do not affect the way the cap screws onto the bottle. Bottle itself is in good condition, no cracks.

RARE -- DERMAY, NUIT D'EXTASE, WOOD, PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1934
This vintage Deco perfume bottle is rare and very unusual. It was made by Dermay Perfumers, Inc., N.Y. for the fragrance "Nuit d'Extase." The bottle is empty. It is made of glass and entirely encased in wood. The cap is black bakelite. The large printed paper label covers the entire front of the bottle and appears to be lacquered along with the rest of the bottle. It's a pretty unidentified scene -- probably somewhere in France. The label is framed in gold printing -- the fragrance name is also printed in gold near the bottom edge. I've been collecting commercial perfume bottles for 17 years and have never seen another example of this bottle.
VERY ODD -- There are errors in the spelling of the fragrance name on the label which reads -- "Nuit de Extasse" (accent grave over the last "s"). This bottle may be worth having just for the mistakes on the label! The bottle, in its box, is pictured in a 1934 ad. See, Commercial Perfume Bottles, by Jacquelyne Y. Jones-North, Schiffer Publishing, unnumbered pg. 211.)
Size: 4 1/8" h. x 2 1/2" square. Condition: Overall -- good -- for a 77-year-old bottle. Missing wood overcap. Wood is dented on the front over the top of the label, shows some scraping on the right side (see photos), other small nicks on the edges but no missing chunks of wood. The light-colored piece of wood on the top has lost its lacquer around the cap area and is stained from perfume. Label, excellent, no tears or missing pieces, some minor scrapes to the lacquer on the label -- the paper itself is not damaged.

REVILLON, CARNET DE BAL, PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1935
This is the original version as it was produced in 1935. The top of the stopper is concave with a deeply etched "R" and ram. There is a gold metallic hang-tag around the bottle neck. The later version of this bottle has a printed, white paper label, glued to the top of the stopper. The bottle is empty. It has a deeply concave bottom -- when inverted, it looks like a brandy snifter -- and can be displayed that way. The hang-tag is printed on both sides and is fully in tact. The front side has the fragrance and maker's names - the reverse side has the signature "R" and states the contents as "28cc" and "5/6 oz."
Size: Just a hair over 2 1/4" h. Condition: No chips or cracks. There is one tiny surface flake on the bottle (see photo) and some imperfections in the glass that look like bubbles. The tag shows some wear and a little loss of gold on the reverse side but is still very readable.

LELONG, INDISCRET -- RARE -- WOOD PLINTH, PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1935
This statuesque bottle stands an impressive 8 1/8" high. It was made for the Lucien Lelong fragrance, "Indiscret." The bottle is empty now but once contained 3 oz. of perfume. The bottle and stopper are frosted with clear highlights -- feels like satin to the touch. The bottle represents gracefully draped fabric, tied at the top with the bow stopper. The label is metallic with black printing. The bottle is attached to a wooden plinth -- the way it was originally produced in 1935. The later version has a glass plinth incorporated into the bottle design. This bottle displays magnificently.
Size: 8 1/8" h. x 3" (at the base). Condition: The bottle itself, excellent, no chips or cracks. The stopper has a small chip on the underside edge of a bow end (see photo), and a tiny flake near the chip (not visible in the photo). There is a fracture on the underside edge of the other bow end (see photo). The base of the stopper neck has some flakes -- not uncommon on vintage bottles (not visible in photo). None of these faults are visible when the stopper is in place -- they are not a disctraction and do not detract from the beauty of the bottle. The label is crimped but still very readable (see additional photos).

ARLY, LA BOHEME, PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1916
This unusual bottle (in the shape of an eye) was made by Arly for the fragrance "La Boheme." The bottle is empty. The flower petal stopper has gray patina. The bottle is frosted with polished highlights and looks the same on both sides, except for the clear round circle on the front for a label. I believe bottles that contained perfume had an all-over gray patina on the frosted areas. This bottle shows no signs of ever having patina. Because of its size, it probably contained eau de toilette. There are no markings on the bottom of this heavy bottle (weighs little more than a 1/2 lb.). This bottle is pictured in a 1916 advertisement (Ref. Commercial Perfume Bottles, by Jacquelyne Y. Jones-North, Schiffer Publishing Co., unnumbered page 183, picture #17).
Size: 4" h. x 4 1/4" w (at widest point). Condition: No label. Bottle -- good vintage condition, tiny flake on front right corner, light surface scratches on polished areas front and back. Stopper -- 2 large chips on the underside edge which are slightly visible from the top side; 4 flea bites also on the underside edge, not visible from the top side (see additional photos).

The opening of the bottle is frosted and molded with the feet and tail feathers of the eagle. The embossed silver foil label, with the fragrance name, is attached on the back side above the frosted base. This is an excellent example of a desirable bottle with seldom-seen labeling. Size: 5 5/8" h. x 2 1/2" orb diameter (approximate). Condition: Excellent, no chips or cracks. The foil label is in very good vintage condition, age-worn corners, no tears. The black printing is worn off the word "Mine" -- the word "Alone" is readable (see photo).

SCHIAPARELLI, LE ROY SOLEIL, BACCARAT PERFUME BOTTLE, DESIGNED BY SALVADOR DALI, c.1945
This magnificent perfume bottle was designed by Salvador Dali for Elsa Schiaparelli's Le Roy Soleil perfume -- it truly is the Rolls Royce of commercial perfume bottles. Schiaparelli commissioned Dali to design this bottle in celebration of the rebirth of France and the free world after the horrors of World War II. The bottle represents a sea of waves accented with gilding and blue enamel. The overcap is a blazing sun rising over the sea and symbolically represents the French monarch, King Louis XIV, referred to as the Sun King (Le Roi Soleil). The inner stopper/dauber is shaped as a sun ray. The gilt face has painted black ravens in flight in a typical Dali surreal motif that suggests the actual features of a face. The bottle is empty now, but once held 3.75 oz. of fragrance. It weighs nearly 2 lbs. The bottom is etched with the Baccarat logo and number 73. There were only 2,000 bottles produced - all in 1945. The original retail price was $150.

Size: 6 3/8" h. x 6" w. Condition: The very things that make this masterpiece so disirable - its design and weight - are the things that make it prone to chipping. Consequently, many of these bottles will have chipping on some of the 14 sun rays. The overcap on this bottle has chips on the ends of 7 long rays. There are no chips on any of the short rays. Click on the gallery image to view pictures of the chips. Remember, the pictures are highly magnified to allow for close inspection and are much less obvious when normally viewed. There is a surface chip on the top of the inner stopper and a professional repair to the dauber where it is attached to the stopper (see pictures). The bottle itself is in excellent condition - no chips or cracks. This bottle displays magnificently.

GRENOVILLE, ENVOI DE FRANCE -- RARE BLOWN GLASS, PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1946
This is a hard-to-find bottle and a rare version of the Grenoville, Envoi de France perfume bottle. The bottle is empty and does not have a label. The stopper represents an American eagle. The more commonly seen version has a clear, molded glass, eagle stopper. The eagle stopper on this bottle is colored blown glass -- not painted. The stopper has a dried rubber(?) seal around the base and is firmly set in the bottle. We have not tried to remove it and suggest that it not be removed -- the seal will crumble and the stopper may not stay in the bottle. The eagle has wonderful detail -- tiny blue eyes -- one on each side of the head which has a very delicate beak. There are tiny formed feet on the front (see photo), and vertical ridges on the wings. The bottle is iridescent (not sick) blown glass. The four sides are concave. Interesting note: When the stopper is viewed from the front, the colors -- blue, white and red -- are the colors of the French flag. When the stopper is viewed from the back, they are the colors of the American flag -- red, white and blue!
Size: 3" h. Condition: Excellent -- no chips or cracks on the bottle or stopper.

LUCIEN LELONG, ORGUEIL, METAL CLAD PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1946
This limited edition bottle was made by Lucien Lelong for "Orgueil." The bottle and stopper are completely covered in gold-colored metal! The bottle is empty. Number 244 is faintly etched and very faintly painted on the base of the stopper neck. The same number is on the INSIDE bottom of the bottle. The bottle opening is 3/4" wide, and the number can be seen by reflecting the inside of the bottle in sunlight or under good incandescent light. The large number is hand-written on paper which must have been glued to the glass before the metal was applied. There is also a round paper label on the bottom of the outside of the bottle that reads, "PARFUMS LUCIEN LELONG, MADE IN FRANCE, NET. CONT. 4 FL. OZ., PARIS."
Size: 4 5/8" h. x 2 3/4" w. (at widest point). Condition: The bottle is in good condition -- minor, normal age scratches. The bottle rim has a very tiny nick and 2 tiny discolored areas. Stopper edge has nicks and dings. The underside of stopper has tiny flakes in the glass along the metal edge which were probably done in the manufacturing process when the metal was applied over the glass. The glass is completely level with the metal, so it would be difficult to chip the glass in that area. No chips to the stopper neck. NOTE: enlarged pictures are taken with a macro lens and greatly enhance any imperfections.

RAPHAEL, REPLIQUE, PERFUME BOTTLE WITH BOX
This is the old-style Raphael "Replique" perfume bottle. The bottle is empty but once held 1/2 oz. of perfume. However, it appears to have never been opened as the stopper is still tied to the bottle neck -- the perfume has completely evaporated! This is not a "Dummy" bottle. The stopper on this old-style bottle looks like a 3-pointed tulip. The newer stopper looks like a 2-pointed tulip. The 3-pointed tulip stopper was used until the mid 1960s (approx. 1964). By 1967 the 2-pointed tulip bottle made its appearance (verified with magazine advertising). The front of the bottle has the classic white label printed in black. CORDAY, TOUJOURS MOI, PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1950
This striking flask-type gilded bottle was made for Corday, "Toujours Moi." The bottle is empty now, but once held 2 oz. of the fragrance. Toujours Moi was introduced to the market in 1923.
